Martial Art II by Yu Nancheng depicts two figures practicing Tai Chi together. Yu’s skillful attention to the movement of the body is clear in this work, as he replicates the thoughtful and controlled moves of the martial art form through his use of impasto. The textured surface gives the piece a sense of vitality, reinforced by the dynamic poses of the figures Yu captures in the work, as well as the vivid “China Red” oil paint used which conveys the tension and intensity of the movement sequence being performed between the two figures.

About the artist

Yu Nancheng, born in 1956 in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, has made significant contributions to the art world over his 40+ year career. Currently based in Shanghai, his works have been exhibited extensively across China and internationally, with collections in the U.S., Germany, Switzerland, France, England, Japan, and various Middle Eastern countries. Yu's innovative use of palette knife application to create layered textures has transformed Chinese oil painting, blending traditional Chinese and Western techniques to define his distinctive style.
