About the artwork
In Yu’s martial art series, he illustrates the grace and control of movement in Tai Chi. The figures practicing the martial art stand out from the flat and monochrome canvas through his skillful use of impasto, which emphasizes their purposeful movements and form, and conveys the spirituality contained in these motions. The dynamic poses of the figures in combat creates energy and vibrancy, that is reinforced by the intensity of the “China Red” oil paint used for the composition. Yu blends the Western background of oil painting with the traditionally Chinese elements of his artworks, with this cultural juxtaposition of techniques creating a powerful visual impact that draws the viewer into the work’s dynamic vitality.
