Thinking of sprucing up your home with new art pieces? With Christmas bazaars and art events like the Affordable Art Fair (happening 22 to 24 November) just round the corner, it’s the perfect time to start building your art collection. But how and where do you begin?We chat with Jazz Chong, owner and director of Ode to Art, to find out more about how homeowners can take the first step on their art journey.
What advice would you give to young homeowners who are buying art for the first time?You need to find an artist that speaks to you in a very personal way, but I always encourage new buyers to do a lot of research on an artist: read about them, and watch their interviews if possible. I regularly fly in some of the international artists I represent, so that collectors and homeowners can get to know them, and understand them on a more personal, and much deeper level.
What are some questions a homeowner should ask when they shop for art?
Getting to know the artist is very important, so you should ask about the artist’s background, their creative process and where they have exhibited their work. You should also ask how to maintain and take care of your artwork.
What buying trends do you think are here to stay?
It is a pleasure for me to see Singapore artists being collected more and more, both by local homeowners who feel that the work of local artists resonates with them, and by tourists or expats, who like to remember Singapore by our culture and our spirit. Our art scene has become increasingly diverse in the last few years, with international influences enriching the local practice considerably.
How should a homeowner select a frame to go with a hanging art piece?
A good frame should protect and highlight an artwork, while also being in harmony with the interior design of the area it is meant for. So before selecting a frame, consider the space intended for your artwork, and show it to your gallery and your interior designer. Both will be able to give you curated advice on an appropriate frame.
How should we care for our art pieces?
Every piece is different, and each medium requires a specific type of care, but some basic rules apply to all artworks: do not display them in direct sunlight and try to avoid the outer walls of your house, as they get a lot of temperature and humidity changes. Artworks are quite easy to maintain, but like everything that is of financial or sentimental value, you’ll want to handle it with care: do not touch them with your fingers and do not use water or chemicals to clean them. A light brush or feather duster is often enough.
For homeowners who want to purchase art, where are some good places to start looking?
Singapore is blessed with many good art galleries, and international art fairs, so that is a good place to start. And I am always happy to welcome homeowners and collectors to Ode to Art and to introduce them to some of my favourite artists!
